This course is designed for nurses with an interest in IBD. The intended results of this activity are increased competence, knowledge and performance and improved patient outcomes.

Upon completion of this activity learners will:

• Have thought through what key information a newly diagnosed patient with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) needs
• Know about the use of mesalazine medication in the treatment of mild to moderate colitis
• Understand issues of compliance for patients on maintenance treatment
• Understand issues of follow-up and support for patients with UC

This course has been developed for IBD nurses and other interdisciplinary non-medical clinicians interested in Inflammatory Bowel Disease(s) (IBD). One major aim of this e-learning activity is to increase competence and knowledge with regard to the management of non-inflammatory symptoms in IBD patients in order to improve patient outcomes.

After this case you will:

• • Understand the mechanisms by which IBD can cause fatigue and how this can be recognised and managed
  • Understand the mechanisms by which IBD can cause non-inflammatory pain and how this can be managed
  • Understand the prevalence of IBS (functional symptoms) in IBD
  • Be aware of the prevalence of faecal incontinence (FI) in IBD
  • Know how to assess the patient for factors which might influence non-inflammatory symptoms
  • Be aware of the range of therapeutic options for treating non-inflammatory symptoms

This sub-course is adapted from the course "Anaemia in Crohn's Disease”, which was developed for gastroenterologists, surgeons, paediatricians, pathologists and other interdisciplinary medical experts interested in Inflammatory Bowel Disease(s) (IBD).  This course has been developed for all nurses who care for patients with IBD. For more advanced knowledge, please follow the main e-learning case, "Anaemia in Crohn's Disease”.

The aim of this e-learning activity is to increase competence and knowledge with regard to the management and care of patients with Crohn's Disease and anaemia in order to improve patient outcomes.
